of Cub Scout Pack 412

How it all Started...

In 1993 an Eagle Scout named Eric Hood was transferred to this area compliments of the United States Marine Corps.  He and his family made The Sanctuary of Newport their home church.  They became very active in various areas of ministry in and around the Church and came to love both the Church and the area.  Around 1997, Eric separated from Active Duty military life and decided to make Newport, North Carolina his permanent home of residence and settle down here.

Somewhere in that time frame, Eric had mentioned to his pastor, Ted Erskine about the desire to start some sort of a Scouting unit chartered by the church.  He had been raised in Scouting and had even been a registered leader while being stationed in Japan.  Pastor Erskine was very interested and so the quest began to try to find the right people to contact.

During this information gathering process, another interesting fellow came to know God and became a part of our local assembly.  Another Eagle Scout, Mr. Alex Glass.  Like Eric Hood, Alex had been raised in Scouting.  When he came here, his full time job was working with troubled youth at the Eckerd Youth Alternative Wilderness Camp E-Ma-Henwu.  He had literally spent 2 years in the "woods".  He too expressed great interest in starting up a Scouting unit.

Meeting the Right People...

During this quest to start up a Scouting unit, Pastor Erskine assigned this whole endeavor to our Outreach Department Head, Ed Gonzalez.  In late-2000, these three men, made contact with the East Carolina Council, who directed them to the Croatan Trails District.  There they were introduced to Mrs. Barbara Johnson.  Currently serving as the District Executive, Barbara's whole life is engaged in the scouting program.

Barbara gave them the necessary tools needed to start up a Cub Scout Pack and pointed them in the right direction.  They met with the District Executive several times and planned to launch this thing at the beginning of the school year of 2001.

Recruiting Leaders...

Selecting the right people for jobs that no one knew anything about was a real challenge.  Finally phone calls were made to eligible leaders within the church, asking if they were interested.  A handful of adults were selected and a date was set for these leaders-elect to meet with the District Executive for an orientation.  She described the various positions in great detail and then the leaders discussed amongst themselves who would do what.  Positions were assigned and the future leaders went home with much excitement and enthusiasm.

Chartering and Recruiting...

On August 19, 2001, the United Pentecostal Church signed the charter for Cub Scout Pack 412 to be born.  The leaders requested the numbers "412" based on the Bible scripture of Acts 4:12 which refers to the name of Jesus, saying:

"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

That weekend, there were 6 boys registered.  The Pack  had plans for a big Roundup at Bogue Elementary and Newport Elementary Schools, however the catastrophic terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 resulted in postponing these events to the following week.

After 2 successful Roundups, the Pack started the year out with 19 Cub Scouts.

On Our Way...

If there is one thing in life that you cannot have too much of, it is fun!  The Pack 412 Scouts enjoy themselves at various scouting events.  September 22, 2001, we introduced our parents to the Pack leadership at an Open House.  The Scouts got to join in with the Church's Children's Ministry with a Just For Kids celebration at the Church.

In October, 2001, the biggest event was the Down On The Farm Family Campout sponsored by the District at Camp Sam Hatcher.  Throughout the month of October, the Pack participated in the Council's annual Trails End Popcorn fundraiser.  Our Pack Goal was set for $1200 and we brought in excess of $1900 in sales.  Way to go boys!

February, 2002 brought about a very successful Scouting for Food drive in conjunction with other local packs.  Our first Annual Blue and Gold Banquet celebrated the birthday of Scouting.

April, 2002 we held our first annual Pinewood Derby.

In July, 2002, Pack 412 went fishing at Radio Island.  We didn't catch much but had a great time.

In August 2002, we visited the Coast Guard base at Fort Macon in Atlantic Beach.  We also kicked off our Roundup season.  Wow...where has the year gone?

The future only holds more fun and of course more morals and values instilled into the minds and hearts of our sons.  We look to the horizon with one thing in mind...To Do Our Best!
