Unit Commissioner

The unit commissioner is assigned by District and is not actually part of the unit.

Responsibilities:
The unit commissioner's job can be briefly restated as -- Visit the meetings of assigned units periodically and be of effective assistance in the following ten ways:

  • Know the Scouting program: keep up to date through regular training.
  • Take the pulse of the unit: periodically review with unit leaders "Health and Safety", the unit's progress toward the Quality Unit Award, as well as the other opportunities for recognition.
  • Know resources: help with 4-fold program planning in the unit. Offer help with unit finances (budgeting), unit leadership training and recruiting (youth and adult).
  • Counsel and assist new unit leaders in assuming a leadership role, by advising of training opportunities, such as Roundtable.
  • Facilitate the on-time annual Charter renewal of your units.
  • Make regular contact with unit leaders, in person or by phone, at least monthly. Keep unit leaders informed of district and council activities.
  • Keep in touch with Chartering Organizations.
  • Contact the unit committee periodically and visit committee meetings in order to keep them active and effective.
  • Act as a the unit’s liaison with various district committees.
  • Attend monthly meetings held by the District Commissioner for the District Commissioner staff each month.
  • Promote Roundtable attendance by your unit leaders, Chartered Organization Representative and unit committee members. Set an example, by attending Roundtable meetings with regularity.
